Suggestions on How to Hire a House Remodeling Contractor
This post was mainly written for those home owners looking to hire remodeling contractors. Tips on how to avoid a remodeling nightmare.
Having worked several years for other home remodeling contractors, we heard a couple of things besides construct a room addition or how to waterproof a shower correctly. We learnt firsthand that there are contractors that were evil out there lying and looking to take advantage of you.
The bad and ugly
“Some” contractors will inform you just about anything to market their occupation. They will make promises and make up stories. Who wishes to work with somebody like this or have to deal with that person for 3 months or so? You need to only engage with one who has your back completely. Will do anything which is necessary to make the work right and also make you more happy. At least that is what we believe that a contractor must do. The reality is some contractors look at your project for a money making experience and not as a remodeling experience. We know contractors twice your age with half the knowledge. They are just businessmen who have building experience.
Look out for salesmen! Perhaps in just a week, they got the job and after getting fired from the auto dealer. Our experience with sales folks is that they will let you know exactly what you’re seeking to hear to close the deal but they barely know the facts. When the job has been built they won’t be around. Who will be responsible for running your job and the workers? Speak to the contractor! Additionally, you should try to speak with their references. Call the homeowner and ask a bunch of questions like, did they do as promised? Did they make change orders? Can they finish on time? How can you rate the quality?
We also recommend speak to the homeowner and to see the recently finished job and see that the work on your own. Be sure that the contractor doesn’t go. If the customer was joyful they wont mind and they will be happy to promote the contractors business. Think about it, they were in your shoes.
Get it in writing
Ensure you’ve got the information. Make sure you have a payment / advancement schedule and you should not be compelled to pay before job completion. Get a start and finish date. We’ve observed remodeling contractors blame the homeowner because the job didn’t go as intended. Do not offer them a budget that would be like giving your credit card to a child. You must have a thorough list of what it is you’re currently receiving for this amount and a set cost.
Do not be scared
This article is meant to protect you, not scare you. You will find you have to guard your home for the ones that are terrible and be informed, although good remodeling contractors out there. Bear in mind the to watch out for the wolf in sheep’s clothes or something like that.
Lastly, check on the internet for reviews and the contractors’ board.
